Azulejo – the traditional Portuguese wall tile to modern interior design

When it comes to wall design, the design industry has come up with quite a few things. Much is invented but also rediscovered and reinterpreted. Turning to the latter category, one encounters many traditional ways of making your own four walls individual and tasteful.

A less well-known species in our circles are the Portuguese tiles. The tradition of tiling came to the Mediterranean regions of the Orient, where it developed from mosaic art. The word mosaic comes from the Greek word Musa, who was the protector of the arts and sciences in mythology.

In Portugal, the so-called Azulejos dress a majority of the outer and inner walls of sacred and secular buildings. Once you have been in this country, the architecture with the colored tile cladding will be remembered as the cityscape’s hallmark.

In public spaces, the Azulejos serve as a kind of underground for the representation of different scenes. However, residential houses usually have monochrome and/ornamental patterns, which can be executed differently. But this tile can adorn not only the façade but also the modern bathroom or the kitchen. Such a wall design, combined with a refined interior, makes your apartment certainly an eye-catcher with a high feel-good factor. The wall tiles are, for example as

  • border tiles
  • Dekorfliesen

Install wall tiles quickly and easily yourself

If you have also decided to install a new tile mirror, whether from Portuguese Azulejos or the other Mediterranean and oriental tiles (e.g., Spain and Tunisia), there are some things to keep in mind to get the best result. Here is a little guide for attaching wall tiles in the kitchen:

  • Prepare the surface: It must be clean, dry, level and stable. Small cracks and bumps can be quickly filled. Before tiling, the substrate must also be treated with a deep-acting barrier primer so that the substrate does not absorb the adhesive.
  • To ensure a straight course of the tiles, you should use a spirit level for the first row to draw a horizontal and a vertical line.
  • Mix the tile adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • With a notched trowel, the adhesive is applied in sections and combed through. The perforation depends on the tile’s back (a strong profile requires large perforation) and the tile size. Wherever later cut tiles are laid, the adhesive can be scraped off with a spatula.
  • The tiles are placed along the marked course in the adhesive bed. For the right distance between the tiles, the so-called tile crosses are used.
  • To cut the tiles, you need a tile cutter and, for round openings, tile pincers.
  • Finally, the wall tiles grouting: Possibly. Scrape out the glued-out mortar with a sponge board or rubber slider diagonally in the joints and clean tile surfaces as soon as it starts to dry. Proceed in sections, best starting with the cleaning where you started grouting.
  • A leftover veil can be removed with a special cleaner.
  • Tile surfaces that come into contact with water, e.g., B. in the sink, must be sealed with silicone joints.

Otherwise, there are no limits to the imagination: the Azulejos are freely combinable and available in numerous variations, conjuring up an exotic flair in your home in no time.
