Wooden ball furniture series by Lee JaeHyo
My favorite kind of furniture designs are those that involve an artistic approach and this stunning Wooden Sphere series is definitely as much art as it is functional objects. The fact that Lee Jae-Hyo was able to create such sculptural designs is no coincidence. He is a world-renowned sculptor and knows how to look at all his creations with his “artist’s eyes” and to work with his “artist” hands and hearts – even when it comes to furniture design.
The wooden ball series is created by forming a solid composition of found wood in spherical form.
As soon as the composition is finished, Lee burns the wood mass until it is completely blackened and charred.
The third step is to polish the outside edges to show the pale, natural wood inside, while the areas around each polished section remain black with char.
In order to create his coffee tables, Lee cuts his spherical compositions in half.
The wooden balls are extremely tactile. Do not you just want to grab the photos and touch them?
No two pieces are alike, because each piece of found wood has its own grain and shape, which means that the blackened cavities are always unique, as is the story in the exposed natural wood grains.
The wooden ball collection also includes pieces that are purely decorative.
Each piece is a fluid organic form that still has geometry in its repeating elements.
Oh, the stories that the piece of wood could tell.
The polished and charred sections create a positive / negative aesthetic.
While most of the collection shows tails, this lounger shows pieces of branches for a more linear look.
An entire family could cuddle up on this couch.
Super coffee table – it’s like a bunch of drums.
